When it comes to choosing family holidays, there is plenty to consider – from picking the perfect area, to finding the most suitable accommodation. The Algarve – the southernmost region of mainland Portugal – has a great range of resorts to choose from and the following are some of the best in the area.
Escape to this popular family resort set amongst the lush vegetation and bright flowers of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve in Quinta do Lago. Monte da Quinta is a luxurious resort, designed with families in mind.
For those looking for spacious and modern accommodation, Monte da Quinta doesn’t disappoint- offering both hotel style self-catering suites and also individual villas and townhouses, which are better suited to larger families wanting extra space inside and out.
When it comes to resort facilities, children are well catered for. Monte da Quinta is one of the best resorts in Quinta do Lago offering a kids club. The action-packed Kid’s World club has a daily programme of supervised activities including crafts, cooking and excursions to nearby attractions in high season. Whilst parents can take the opportunity to enjoy a spa treatment, discover the championship golf courses or spend some quality time together.
There are also two swimming pools, including a children’s pool, several different restaurants for those days when you don’t want to cook and a shop selling essential items including groceries. There is also a regular shuttle bus to the beach during high season, where Monte da Quinta has an area set aside especially for resort guests.
The stylish Martinhal Beach Resort puts families at the heart of everything it offers. Designed to blend into its protected natural setting in Sagres, the contemporary architecture and facilities combine to offer total luxury.
Accommodation in Martinhal consists of rooms situated in Hotel Martinhal, all beautifully decorated and positioned to take advantage of the stunning views of the area. Although spacious, families with young children may prefer the additional space and privacy offered by the houses in Martinhal Village.
Each property is elegantly furnished with items created using beautiful natural materials to reflect the houses surroundings. The facilities include fully equipped modern kitchens and private terraces. These are truly homely and comfortable holiday properties for family groups.
The family friendly focus extends to the resort facilities, where you can find a well-stocked convenience store offering everything from groceries and locally produced wines to baby essentials and holiday souvenirs.
Children of all ages can take part in various activities, whilst older children and teens can hang out in the unsupervised Blue Room and play pool and table football. The Baby Concierge service will be happy to provide you with baby equipment such as stair gates and baby baths offering peace of mind. There are also plenty of activities to enable the family to have fun together, whether mountain biking, dolphin watching or body-boarding.
The resort has a number of restaurants and bars, all offering dedicated children’s menus and play areas to keep little ones entertained while they wait.
Situated on the beach-front at Porto de Mos, you cannot get any closer to the beach, whilst the bustling town of Lagos is just five minutes’ drive away. The location and facilities of Belmar Beach and Spa resort make this a popular choice and is ideal for families with older children seeking a relaxing beach break.
The resort is relatively new and offers a mix of contemporary luxury apartments, from studios to three bedrooms across the aparthotel and cluster apartment blocks. Guests staying in the aparthotel are served by two communal pools and a children’s pool, whilst each cluster has its own swimming pool. Children can also let off steam on the multi-purpose sports pitch or at the children’s playground.
Although the apartments come with a fully equipped kitchen, Restaurante Levante offers a variety of dishes throughout the day, and children are more than welcome. The resort is also happy to provide high chairs and travel cots, should you require them.
There are also a number of family-friendly activities available locally, including horse riding and water amusement parks. Car hire is definitely recommended so you can enjoy all that the area has to offer, with shops, bars and attractions just outside of the resort.
